The Mega Millions multi-state lotto game is getting a mega upgrade next year. We’re here to give you a preview of what those changes are and what they mean for the game.
What is the change happening with Mega Millions?
The most noticeable change that you will see is the price of tickets are increasing from $2 to $5 per play.
What are the benefits to the player with the change in price?
There will be several enhancements to the game, including:
-Improved odds to win the jackpot
-Bigger jackpots more frequently
-Larger starting jackpots
-Faster growing jackpots
-A built-in multiplier on every play, automatically improving every non-jackpot win: 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X – up to $10 million for matching the five white balls.
-No breakeven prizes, meaning when you win, you’ll always win more than the cost of the ticket
Why is the cost going up to $5?
A couple of reasons. First off, to support the larger starting jackpots (more on that to come next year). Secondly, to support the built-in multiplier, which will automatically be included on every play to improve your odds to win larger non-jackpot prizes.
Has a Mega Millions jackpot ever been won in Minnesota?
Yes! We had our first and only jackpot win in Minnesota in April of 2022. A couple won a $110 million jackpot and selected the $66.9 million cash option. The winning ticket was purchased at a Holiday Stationstore in Ramsey.
The new Mega Millions game should produce even more billionaires and millionaires so we’re hoping it won’t be long until we have our next jackpot winner in Minnesota.
When does the change happen?
The new and improved Mega Millions game will launch in April 2025. We’ll offer more details on our website as we get closer, including a countdown to the advanced draw purchase schedule.
Until then, we hope you enjoy playing Mega Millions on Tuesdays and Fridays.
