Head through the forests and small towns of northern Minnesota to Bemidji. Legend has it that Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes were formed as Paul Bunyan worked his way across the north country and his giant footprints filled with rainwater. The 18-foot-tall, plaid-wearing lumberjack was created in 1937 for the local winter carnival. His pal, Babe the Blue Ox, was built by his side two years later. Today they both stand tall on the south shore of Lake Bemidji. Take a few photos of your bestie next to Paul.

While you’re out exploring, check out Lake Bemidji State Park on the north side of the lake. This beautiful state park is celebrating its’ 100th anniversary. It’s the perfect place for bird watching, hiking or a quiet day of fishing. If you need to gas up or grab a picnic for the day, stop in at Ortons’ Bemidji Cenex or the Holiday Stationstore in town. Don’t forget to stock up on lottery tickets while you’re there. You just might win enough to trade in the SUV for a hot new convertible!
Did you know that $750,000 in lottery proceeds have funded projects at Bemidji State University to study the impact of beavers on brook trout, possible uses for potato waste, and the prevention of asphalt deterioration? And that $1.25 million in lottery funds helped to acquire and develop the 100 miles of hiking, biking and snowmobile trails that comprise the Paul Bunyan State Trail? Time to get out and go places!
