Minnesota illustrator Brent Schoonover brings together some of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks to set the scene on the lottery’s newest $5 scratch game Road Trip!
Brent designed and illustrated the ticket using places that he’s enjoyed visiting on road trips with family, including the world’s largest ball of twine in Darwin. Brent said he was intrigued by the “quirky charm of the small town” and the fact that’s it’s featured in a Weird Al Yankovic song.
He’s also hit the road to see Big Ole in Alexandria, which is prominently featured on the ticket, along with the Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis and Split Rock Lighthouse.
Brent was excited to have the opportunity to work with the Minnesota Lottery, especially since designing artwork for a scratch game was on his bucket list.
Brent is best known for his work with Marvel and DC, including a Captain America graphic novel but he also does freelance design work for many Minnesota corporations including Polaris, the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota History Center, which is how he connected with the Minnesota Lottery.
Originally from southern Wisconsin, Brent’s love of art and drawing began when his dad gave him his first comic book. He was fascinated by the art and started drawing his own comics and superheroes. Brent said he was lucky that his parents and teachers encouraged his love of drawing while he was growing up. Eventually he was able to turn his hobby into a career after attending the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where he studied Comic Art and Illustration.
Brent said he’s looking forward to seeing the Road Trip! scratch game at lottery retailers throughout Minnesota this summer while road trip season is in full swing.
The Road Trip! scratch game is the newest addition to the lottery’s Minnesota Artist series of scratch games. Pick one up today, then get out and discover something new on your own summer road trip.
